The Concept of Holism

Through this area of study, we examine the theory of holism and reflect on its historic origins and its use in public health fields. We argue that a rejuvenated rediscovery of this notion in public health is needed and we highlight its utility in the study and positive promotion of child health. While we explore holism as an ancient theme, we also recognize it as a concept that has surfaced in modern public health and health promotion literature and that has utility for current practice. Through this report, we hope to stimulate discussion and generate further opportunities for etiological and preventive thinking, as well as offer some possible directions to advance the field of child health research.
